Parallel patterns manifest throughout the experiment. Specifically, when asking, “What should I do?” ELIZA repetitively replies, “Does that question interest you?” Another typical response is “I see,” which appears to emerge as an alternate action to ambiguous, arbitrary automated questions. Nonetheless, little to nothing can be derived from such misguided exchanges, except frustration and frozen monitors. Moreover, ELIZA’s monotonous messaging actualizes its mechanical make-up, countering the introductory discourse of The New Media Reader, in which Janet Murray refers to ELIZA as an “animated . . . instructive . . . perceived human being.”
