Further contention comes from the ELIZA Chat Bot website itself. Its heading reads, “Is she a Rogerian psychotherapist, a semi intelligent chatbot, or just a toy?” This seems to establish the many functions of ELIZA. The website continues to explain, “ELIZA, one of the original chat bots, is now ready to talk to you. She is programmed to behave as a Rogerian psychotherapist, and is an interesting example of the limitations of early artificial intelligence programs. If ELIZA (or you, or your web browser) gets confused, refresh the page.” There are many disparities in these statements. If ELIZA is intended “to behave as a Rogerian psychotherapist,” why can she also be perceived as “a semi intelligent chatbot or just a toy”? Furthermore, the disadvantages of this technology are displayed by its programmers in their introductory description of ELIZA, who is depicted as “semi intelligent” and an “example of the limitations of early artificial intelligence programs.” Additionally, it is noteworthy that a disclaimer is provided to account for malfunctions. Clearly established and acknowledged, her design is defective.
